Ian Rapoport breaks the news that Wentz is fully cleared

Yesterday a tweet from Ian Rapoport (@rapsheet) stated that Wentz was fully cleared for OTAs with the Philadelphia Eagles. After another offseason of speculation and unanswered questions, the Eagles QB is ready to go for the start of the offseason program.

Secrecy of the Eagles

We learned last season that the Eagles have taken a more secretive approach when it comes to their players’ injuries. Players and coaches in the organization (mainly Doug Pederson) avoided specific labeling of injuries. The injury to Wentz’s back was no exception.

Wentz first appeared on the injury report early in the season with lower back tightness/stiffness. The coaches at the time said it was nothing to worry about. It was just some soreness after getting back on the field for the first time. However, as the season went on, the injury report didn’t change, and Wentz didn’t look like himself out on the field. It was hard to tell if he wasn’t mentally healthy because of the knee or if there was something new wrong. Regardless, he didn’t look like the MVP candidate of the previous year.

The stress fracture in the spine

It was a crossroads in the season where the door nearly closed on the playoffs for 2018. It seemed like the Eagles thought it would be in the best interest of Wentz, his career, and his preparation for this upcoming season, to shut him down for the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign. Although the Eagles turned it around and made a playoff push. However, I personally think it was the right idea. He played with soreness since October, but upon discovery of the fracture, that was the end of Wentz’s season.

Wentz was at his best when he had a full offseason under his belt and had the opportunity to work with the guys on offense and get the chemistry right. Everything with the Eagles offense clicked in 2017. There’s a good reason why Wentz led the NFL in touchdowns up until week 17, having only played through 13.5 weeks. Everything worked and Wentz played sensationally. THAT is the kind of talent he has and is determined to demonstrate.

From getting healthy to fully cleared

Shutting Wentz down in early December allowed him almost a full six months to let his body rest before OTAs. In this time, Wentz paid attention to his diet and put in work where he could, without putting pressure on his back. He focused on getting healthy and being in his best shape. And trust me, he looks like it.

Emphasis on Wentz succeeding

This is a quarterback with a lot of talent. We’ve seen that. The Eagles know that building their franchise around Wentz is what will set them up for consistent success. Therefore, the 2019 offseason consisted of solidifying the offensive line as well as adding firepower weapons. The starting OL and line depth have been taken care of and through trades and the draft, it’s obvious that providing Wentz with a lethal arsenal was the goal. Between Alshon Jeffery, Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Nelson Agholor, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Jordan Howard, Miles Sanders, and DeSean Jackson, this offense will be EXTREMELY high powered.

After giving his back the time to heal, Wentz has been fully cleared for the OTA program for the Eagles. Therefore, now he can consistently work with the starters and get all of the reps from that position. By the time training camp comes around this team will be solidifying into a powerhouse to start the season.
